On Tuesday, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman and other clerics from various schools of thought held a press conference declaring that the mosques won’t be under lockdown anymore.

Talking about the congregational prayers in Ramzan, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman said that congregational prayers were obligatory for men and so, Taraweeh and Itikaf would continue to take place as per tradition.

Giving some guidelines to avoid the risk of spreading COVID-19, the conveners of the press conference advised the people to wear masks and perform ablution at their homes.

The presser led to a war of words between proponents and opponents of Mufti Muneeb on social media.

However, it was Federal Minister for Science & Technology, Fawad Chaudhry whose Mufti Muneeb tweet attracted the most attention.

In a savage tweet, Fawad Chaudhry wrote that, “Mufti Muneeb is our elder and I respect him but he can’t even see something as big as the moon , how then will he see something as microscopic as the coronavirus?”

He also wrote, “We have brought to the attention of the Ministry of Religious Affairs that if the head of their ministerial committee pokes fun at the government’s orders then why expect much from others?”

The Federal Minister for Science & Technology further said that there will be no moon sighting this year.

He wrote, “As for Ramzan, the moon will be sighted on April 24 and the first fast is expected to be on April 25. We had planned to hold a gathering for moon sighting but the coronavirus has cancelled all congregations. God willing, if we get a chance next year, chand raat would be celebrated.”

Now, Pakistanis remained severely divided on social media.

Many sided with Fawad Chaudhry for challenging the religious leader.

While a lot of others lashed out at the federal minister for insulting the religious cleric.
