Punjab Government Dismisses A Senior Official After Sexual Misconduct Proved

The #MeToo movement might not have impacted Pakistan’s entertainment industry in the same way that it took down bigwigs in Hollywood and Bollywood but it is certainly making its presence felt in Pakistan.

In the aftermath of the global campaign against sexual harassment, Pakistani women are beginning to feel more confident by the day to come out against their harassers.

For instance, last year a school-going girl’s enraged viral video led to the dismissal of Sadat Bashir, a government appointed examiner who had been molesting minor girls during examinations for over a decade.

In a recent case a senior official of the Punjab government was dismissed after Punjab Ombudsperson received and investigated a complaint lodged by a female staff member of District Industrial Home for Women, Sanatzar.

The complainant had shared that the senior official had been demanding sexual favours from her and had also indulged in inappropriate physical contact. The dismissed officer had also threatened her of dire consequences if she lodged a formal complain.

Ombudsperson Punjab Rukhsana Gillani following the dismissal of the senior official encouraged more women to come forward, stating that silence would not solve the menace of sexual harassment in workplaces.
