Pakistan was wildly shocked when the announcement of DG ISPR Maj. General Asif Ghafoor being replaced from his position went insanely viral on Thursday evening.

For the last two years, Major General Ghafoor had not merely been the military’s spokesperson but his official and personal handles on Twitter were also among the most followed Pakistani accounts.

Maj. General Asif Ghafoor was appointed as the Director General of ISPR in December 2016 and according to recent turn of events, his tenure as DG had concluded. The news of Major General Asif Ghafoor being replaced as DG ISPR was as big as it gets and there’s hardly a Pakistani who didn’t have something to say about this unexpected change.

Then there were those who didn’t care much about the news itself but were certainly more interested to know if former DG ISPR Asif Ghafoor had been replaced because of his ever-increasing string of Twitter spats.

The Major General’s regular critics had reasons to celebrate.

And while most of the country was still obsessing with over Maj. General Ghafoor, there were a few who thought it appropriate to welcome the incoming Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations.

On his part the former ISPR chief sent out a tweet almost immediately after the announcement, thanking his well-wishers for his support.

Given that Major general Asif Ghafoor has become a celebrity in his own right following his stint as DG ISPR, it will be interesting to see if his personal Twitter handle remains as active as it was throughout his tenure.

At the same time it will also be interesting to see if the incoming DG ISPR follows the steps of his predecessor and becomes an active netizen.

Guess, we’ll have to wait at least a few weeks before these questions can be answered.
