Javed Jabbar is a writer and a former Senator and has served as the Federal Minister of Pakistan previously.

The Father of famous film producer Mehreen Jabbar is also associated with conflict resolution and co-operation initiatives between Pakistan and India in particular and in South Asia generally.

Recently, a clip from a seminar between Indian and Pakistani scholars went viral on the internet in which Javed Jabbar was

Javed Jabbar gave a befitting reply to a participant who questioned the rationale for the existence of Pakistan.

He began by explaining the fact that the very state of India actually came into existence for the first time in 1947. He clarified that pre-partition India was a region and never a state.

The former senator maintained that today what we call “India” never possessed the political structure of a state that included Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.

“To say that Pakistan was carved out of India is nothing but a myth.”

It was a process of independence of two states NOT partition.

He then went on to explain that religion can be one element that contributes towards nationalism.

Jabbar schooled the fellow Indian participant by defining a pluralist society, “Pakistan’s genesis was pluralist and it remains so.”

Just as India’s society is diverse, so is Pakistani society.

Jabbar went on to say that 1971 did not represent the rejection of the two nation theory. It represented the rejection of the two state theory, he added.

He concluded his remarks by saying that one should not demean dialogue by questioning the rationale based on any claimed identity.
