Emergence of Coronavirus in China has stirred health concerns globally as at least 17 people are dead and 500 infected in the country and continues to spread throughout Asia and across the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is closely looking for evidences and has called a meeting to determine whether to declare a global public health emergency over the disease.

What is Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus has caused alarm globally because of its connection to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). It belongs to broad family of viruses, but only six are known to infect people.

Symptoms

The coronaviruses family can cause symptoms ranging from a mild cold all the way through to death. It seems to start with a fever, followed by a dry cough and then, almost after a week, leads to shortness of breath.

In 2002, Severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars), caused by a coronavirus, killed 774 of the 8,098 people infected in an outbreak that started in China.

How can Coronavirus affect Pakistan?

With a huge flux of Chinese (and Pakistanis) across the countries and the virus being SARS-like; Pakistan is at a huge risk of being affected by the virus.

In response to the huge public concerns, Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination has established emergency rooms for mandatory health screening of all flights coming from China.

While there has been a probability of the virus already being travelled to Pakistan, health authorities are to investigate anyone with symptoms of severe respiratory infections and a history of travel to Wuhan within the last 15 days.

Since there is no vaccine for this virus it can only be prevented by identifying the patients as early as possible and treat them in isolation.

To prevent the virus from spreading further, Chinese government has also restricted travel from and to Wuhan.
