After months of speculation, Motorola has finally launched Moto Razr 2019, combining the signature design of the old school Moto Razr with the high end technology of a foldable touch screen phone. A pocket sized flip phone, ready to take back its place on the throne of this tech kingdom through the power of nostalgia.

Motorola Razr, which was a household name in the mid-2000’s and a pioneer in flip-phones, is back in the market. The modern-retro clamshell was launched in Los Angeles on Wednesday, November 13, 2019.

The Cost of Moto Razr 2019

The new Razr costs $1,500 and that is a hell of a lot of money considering the specs of the phone as compared to other devices in the same category.

In Pakistan, Moto Razr is expected to be launched mid-December and I’m assuming a similar price tag in Pakistan but will update the article once there is a definite figure.

For the time being, let’s have a look at the hardware and software specs this phone has to offer.

Display Features

The new Razr is just as thin as the old one when folded (14 millimeters) but it comes with a 6.2 inch plastic OLED foldable display with an aspect ratio of 21:9 and 2142 x 876 pixels.

The secondary external display comes with a 2.7 inch glass OLED, 4:3 aspect ratio and 800 x 600 pixels. You can easily access your emails and messages on the front screen without the need for opening your phone.

App Accessibility

Only specific apps are allowed on the front screen currently but the officials at Motorola say that they will expand the accessibility in the future. There is also no headphone jack which might be a deal breaker for some customers.

Processing Speed & Memory

Moto Razr comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor. It has a 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Bear in mind that there is no SD card support so you won’t be able to extend on the storage capacity. This designer set is powered by split batteries i.e. one on each side, in order to balance out the weight of the phone, which amounts to 2510mAh and it runs on Android 9 Pie.

Is Moto Razr 2019 really a foldable phone?

It might not be right to call it a foldable phone as it’s a classic flip phone, considering the designs of Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X.

Moto Razr folds vertically from top to bottom which creates a shorter crease in the middle as compared to Galaxy Fold or Mate X which folds like a book, creating a much larger crease in the middle. The new Razr uses a proprietary hinge system with Motorola’s revolutionary Shatter Shield technique which makes the phone more durable and stronger.

Camera Specs

When it comes to camera, Razr houses a primary camera of simple single lens 16MP camera and the secondary camera of 5MP. This comes as a bit of a surprise considering the mind boggling 3-4 lens cameras Motorola has been using in its One series. Considering the price tag, the camera should be much more efficient but as it is not a flagship phone, I’ll let that one slide.

My final verdict?

To sum up this retro reboot by Motorola, is a sleek, fashion forward smartphone which is justifying its price tag only by its design and if you’re parting with $1,500 for this phone, you’re paying for the looks and the R&D work that has gone into that folding screen and not for cutting-edge technology.
