For the satisfaction of those who seemed unhappy with Aasia Bibi’s trial and acquittal, a review petition was entertained by the Supreme Court. However, the petitioner was unable to add anything new to the proceedings or discredit the previous verdict and so the review petition was rejected in January this year.

Aasia Bibi had been kept under tight state security since her release. However, today she and her family flew out of Pakistan to an undisclosed location where it is hoped that they will be able to lead a life of normalcy going forward.

Aasia Bibi’s trial at the lower and high court level was a huge disappointment for the justice system in Pakistan. The judgments at those levels were unfortunately aimed at appeasing the oppressors rather than protecting the hapless woman who had been wrongfully accused of a crime as sensitive as blasphemy.
