Tips on how to survive the heat in Pakistan

As we all know, there’s a heatwave going around in Pakistan since mid-May. Taking precautions during a heatwave is a simple task; all you have to do is be aware of some tips. Because a heatwave is no joke! There is the risk of getting skin cancer, alongside constant fainting and possibly even death. Hence, I’ll be telling you some tips on how to stay safe during this time.

How to beat the heat

With temperatures varying between 30-40 degrees Celsius, staying at a normal temperature is very important. The most obvious way to avoid the heat is by staying indoors whenever you can. Try to limit your outdoor activities since they can lead to you overheating unnecessarily. Especially during midday when the temperature is at its peak. Staying indoors/ at home can even help you connect with your family more (because, as we know, all desi parents like to put everyone in the same room).

Stay indoors to protect yourself from the heat

Protect yourself from harmful UV radiation

Secondly, the UV rays of the sun are extremely harsh, and they increase the risk of getting skin cancer. Applying sunscreen is the most efficient way to steer clear of it. For an average amount of outdoor activity like walking or running, SPF30 is generally recommended. However, if you’re planning a long day out, SPF 50 or higher would be better for you. In general, it is recommended you wear sunscreen daily, no matter what, but if you don’t want to, you should at least use it during extremely sunny days for a layer of extra protection.

Applying suncreen during the summer is essential

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat or carrying an umbrella with you can also add an added layer of protection from the sun and harmful UV rays.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

During such extreme heat, hydration is an absolute must. Drinking water keeps your body cool and keeps you from fainting. It would be in your best interest if you kept a water bottle with you whenever you go out anywhere. A metal water bottle would be recommended since that’ll keep your water cooler for longer and it’ll allow you to stay refreshed. Drinking 2-3 Litres or 8-12 cups daily is a necessity, but if you bump that up to another litre, I think you’ll be okay.

Stay safe during this time by following these tips and spreading the word to your friends and family so that they also live their best lives and beat the heat!
