According to media reports, Pakistan is likely to give Usman Khan the opportunity to open the innings with Rizwan during the series against England. This decision to introduce a new opening pair is sensible for several reasons. Firstly, despite numerous chances, Saim Ayub has failed to perform at the highest level, leaving the selectors with little choice but to experiment.

Usman performed brilliantly as an opener in the last PSL. However, at the international level, he has so far only been given opportunities in the middle order. Therefore, it makes sense to see if he can establish himself at the international level while batting in his regular position.

Babar Azam’s strike-rate improved considerably during the previous series. It seems clear that the Gary Kirsten wants Babar to bat freely at his full potential without worrying about the eventual result. The strategy was evident during the last series and it seems, the new white-ball coach will not back away from employing it once more against England.
