Zaid Hamid, although not as relevant as he was almost a decade ago has not allowed his dwindling influence to come in the way of his opinions. This has often landed him in controversies that could otherwise have been avoided.

However, Zaid Hamid took on a cause recently that very few expected him to take-up given his anti-America stance and his support of American opponents on matters of international relations.

Taking to Twitter, Zaid Hamid posted a tweet criticizing the Chinese government for allegedly oppressing its Muslim population.

Not one to ignore, a Chinese diplomat in Pakistan, Lijian Zhao soon jumped in to counter Hamid’s criticism of his government.

Discrediting Zaid Hamid’s opinion, Zhao asked Hamid to “…do some homework,” before writing about China.

Zhao’s tweet only added fuel to the fire, encouraging Hamid to post an entire thread explaining why he believed that Uighur Muslims in China were being persecuted.

The episode between Zaid Hamid and the Chinese diplomat did not end with the thread.

Hamid wants the matter of alleged Muslim persecution in China to be debated “openly” so the “truth” – whatever it might be – is finally revealed.

  1. Nothing wrong with asking Chinese government to provide evidence that they are not persecuting Muslims. What Zaid Hamid is asking the Chinese government is to respect the Muslim sentiments and allow a fact finding mission to be sent to China to prove or disprove the “CIA’s propaganda”.

Before 1948 Xinjiang province was called East Turkestan and was always ruled by Muslims.
It was annexed by the communist China.

Oppression anywhere is injustice everywhere. If we do not have the capability to physically help the oppressed people, then the least we can do is to raise voice for them.

  2. zaid is right …instead of writing this article from a third-man perspective we should be supporting patriots like zaid in investigating whats going on with the muslims of sinkiang.

I feel we take to ridiculing anyone instead of offering support where matters of muslims come up.

  3. Zaidhamid is doing a wonderful job, this is very serious when China and Pakistan are partners, Chinese should read about muslim history muslim ruled the world and will rule again, then what Chinese will do, but Muslims will forgive

  4. Uiguirh muslims are under threat in china..They r not safe..Chinese govt have the responsibility to protect minorities not to persecute or harm them..Pak have a good relation with china..we hope chinese govt will solve the issue of uiguirh muslims..

  5. I have seen a BBC documentary on uiger muslims. Young boys and girls are forced to live in concentration camps whereas those who are free are treated nothing more than circus animals. They dont have privacy . Tourists are allowed to enter their houses. Take their pictures.
