There was a time – not very long ago – when meeting with a civil servant meant either having to wait in long ques or seeking appointments. And so, the only time someone would embark on a “mission” to meet with a senior government official was almost always in the backdrop of a pressing personal or professional matter that needed resolution or an issue of public interest that had to be brought to the respective bureaucrat’s attention.
However, thanks to digital media, long ques and lengthy appointment-seeking-processes are becoming a thing of the past. Public servants are now more accessible to common citizens than ever before.
And while almost every department is coming up with its own portals to digitize the governance process and make interaction between the citizens and the government smoother, perhaps the most potent tools being used to bridge this gap are the various social media platforms.
Twitter for instance, has quickly risen in favour, both with common Pakistanis as well as senior bureaucrats. Each side is making use of the micro-blogging website to share information, lodge – and update on action taken against – complaints, issue notifications, give and seek feedback and even engage in some good-hearted chit-chat.
All of this would have been unimaginable only 10 years ago; however today digital interaction between citizens and civil servants has become a common norm.
While we’ve shared some key accounts with you from time to time, at the end of 2018, let’s take a look at some of the most active and helpful Twitter handles belonging to Pakistani civil servant across the country. In no particular order, here they are.
