Shootout in Sahiwal Claimed 4 Lives

4 persons, including a man, his wife, their teenage daughter and their friend were shot dead by officials of Sahiwal’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on Saturday.

According to CTD’s version, the car had been intercepted based on the information provided by intelligence agencies. As per the police’s story, the two men shot dead during the encounter were terrorists who were travelling with family to avoid scrutiny. When they were asked to surrender, they opened fire on the police after which, the police had no option but to retaliate.

However, the version of the children inside the car who survived as well as the eye-witnesses completely contradicts the police’s version. According to eye witnesses the policemen themselves were trying to rob the ill-fated passengers and that no fire arms or explosives were found in the vehicle of the deceased.

The Prime Minister has taken notice of the incident and a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has been formed on the orders of Inspector General Punjab to probe the tragedy.

Justice Saqib Nisar retired from his post as the 25th Chief Justice of Pakistan on Thursday.

Nisar’s departure was immediately met with a number of Twitter trends, most of which were marked by unflattering good-bye notes for the former Chief Justice.

While the fairness of these trends can certainly be contested, they did not come as a surprise given the profile of Nisar’s tenure that was marked with verdicts that not merely irked powerful individuals on both sides of the political divide but also MNCs as well as private school and hospital owners.
