President Arif Alvi while speaking to Hamid Mir on the Geo News’ talk show, Capital Talk, in a rather insensitive statement used “rape” as a metaphor while commenting on the Independent Power Companies (IPP) report.

President Arif Alvi said it seemed that the country “has not only been raped but gang raped by mafias.”

He said that after reading the executive summary of the report he was shocked and told the prime minister:

Forgive me for what I’m about to say but my exact words to the premier were that if this report is factual then the country has not only been raped but gang raped by mafias.

President’s comment has infuriated many people on social media and garnered severe online criticism.

Many said that using the word “rape” as a metaphor to describe trivial issues is equivalent to belittling the trauma of the sexual abuse survivors.

Twitterati lambasted the President for his ignorance that contributed to the offensive statement.

Coming from the head of state of a country where sexual violence remains rampant, the statement was a cause of concern for many.

An apology seems to be in order by the President for hurting the sentiments of rape survivors and their families.

That President Alvi is a boomer is no secret at all but for a person in his position – to do the least – he needs to up his sensitivity game
