I still remember it like yesterday, studying in school about the struggles and sacrifices made by countless individuals to get independence from the British rule for a place that the future generations could truly call home.

It was 23rd of March, 1940, when it was decided that a separate homeland for the Muslims of the sub-continent would be demanded and that it was to be called Pakistan. Only seven years later, the struggle came to an end and Pakistan appeared on the map of the world.

Almost 71 years later in the present time, I’m forced to ask myself if the Islamic Republic of Pakistan really is an Islamic state where all the citizens live as brothers and sisters?

Don’t get me wrong, I am a patriot to the core. I wouldn’t hesitate for even a moment to take a bullet for my country but with the chaos that I see around, I can’t help but wonder, how our elders would feel if they were to see Pakistan in the  state that it is in today? Was the result of all the struggles supposed to be just being  an Islamic state in the documents and on the map when in actuality most of us are living in fear and insecurities?

The biggest irony, perhaps is that most of these problems are caused by people who claim to be Muslims but demonstrate no shame in instigating violence, creating unrest and causing hardships for the people around them. Their campaign of moral corruption has not just ruined the serenity of the peace-loving Pakistanis such as myself but has led many a young minds astray.

Contradicting with my own thoughts, I would say everything is “normal,” since there isn’t a country in the world that I can think of to be any different. But then an internal voice urges me to not conform to what is considered normal and instead strive for a Pakistan that is far superior than the mediocrity that we are expected to make peace with.

So, this Pakistan Resolution Day, my personal resolution and message to fellow Pakistanis is very simple:

There is no better way to live than to live in an environment of peace and there is no better use of our mortal lives than to become message-bearers of tolerance and harmony. Over the past decade, the attitude of a common Pakistani has become very aggressive and extreme. We need to ease up and break the tension in our daily-life interactions. Life is too precious to squander away by spreading  negativity and hate. Pakistanis need to get along and we can’t do this unless we learn the simple art of respecting diverse views.

This Pakistan Resolution Day, let’s please put aside our stereotypes, pack away our resentments and entirely do-away with intolerance so that none of us remains a Pukhtoon, Punjabi, Baloch, Sindhi, Kashmiri or Saraiki. May we all experience the euphoria of standing united under the green and white flag as one nation!
