Maulana Tariq Jamil appeared on PM Imran Khan’s Ehsaas Telethon on Thursday to conclude the coronavirus fund raising program with his dua.

During the live telethon, Maulana Tariq Jamil made a comment that left many believe that he was blaming women for causing coronavirus pandemic in Pakistan.

While talking about Ikhlaaq Maulana mentioned how behayai (immodesty) is the root cause of all the problems that a country faces. He then went on to say, “Who is making the daughters of the nation dance?”

“Who is making them wear revealing clothes?” Maulana questioned on live television.

He further gave the example of Hazrat Loot’s followers who were destroyed for their immodesty. Maulana pointed that when “Muslim daughters or Muslim youngsters” stop being modest then God’s punishment is inevitable.

Many Twitterati found his statement offensive and equated it with objectifying women’s bodies.

People also made references to his earlier sermon in which he had gone to great lengths to explain a hoor’s body. Many accused him of sexualising a woman’s body for the benefit of his male audience.

People also pointed out the duplicity of the cleric’s prayer that blamed women for calamities but conveniently disregarded child rapists within the clergy.
