Maryam Nawaz’s Twitter handle is known for fiery tweets, generous compliments for PML-N loyalists and scathing remarks for her critics. In the days leading up to her flight to Pakistan from London, right up to the point that she and her father, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif landed and were taken into police custody, @MaryamNSharif was sending out tweets that, one after the other served as fodder for headlines in the media.
So, after 21 days of jail time, when the Sharif scion was set free on September 19, many had waited with held breath for her Twitter handle to come to life once again. But, it never did. No explanation was given for this unfamiliar silence leading many to speculate.
However, after almost three months of restraint, Maryam Nawaz, it seems has returned to Twitter with a vengeance.
On the eve of the verdict in her father’s Al-Azizia property reference, Maryam Nawaz announced her return with this tweet.
The last time I saw HER was in the coffin. The last time I saw HIM smile was with HER. May Allah have mercy on both of you. Ameen 🤲🏼♥️ pic.twitter.com/q5hlws8rf6

And even though the tweet was sent out late in the night, by early morning in Pakistan, Sharif’s supporters had ensured that #Welcomebackaryam was the top trend on the micro-blogging website.

This tweet, my dears, is transfer of batton from one generation to another.
Its not a mere transfer of responsibility but also of all the weight that was shouldered by our great leader Mian Nawaz Sharif.
Stay strong Nawaz Sharif

Whether this would turn out to be a one-off tweet or the eldest Sharif sibling’s handle would actually stand revived is yet to be seen.
