The moment Chief Minister Sindh, Murad Ali Shah ordered barricades and containers to be removed from the roads leading to Seaview, we knew Karachi was in for some serious fun on New Year’s eve.
After years, Karachi has been flung open for New Year's ravellers. Good move by CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah. Also, 2017 was the first year in more than a decade that the city didn't witness even a single shutdown. Well done Sindh & Federal govts and Rangers. pic.twitter.com/WCZKfZilZ2

It’s been so long since Karachiites have been allowed a New Year’s celebration that we can’t even remember the last time it happened!

A little before midnight, Karachi walas began packing the roads in festive anticipation. Roads leading to Seaview, Super Highway and Liaquat Ali Khan Chowk were blocked with bumper to bumper traffic. The citizens including children happily tagged along with their families to join in the biggest collective road fest the city has seen in a long, long time.

The best part was perhaps the abundance of fireworks over firearms for once. The gun fire enthusiast were forced to step aside as the middle class came out in unprecedented numbers to usher in 2018.

That said, not all gun lovers had the good sense of enjoying the fireworks like normal people and 15 citizens were injured because of aerial firing related accidents. This irresponsible show of power has been a norm even in the long years when New Year’s celebrations were not allowed. With average citizens claiming the roads to celebrate, here’s hoping that better sense will prevail in 2018.
