Education is a basic human right. At the end of the day, there is no difference between us and a little girl begging for money. And so it is the right of every girl to be given access to education.

In a world where illiteracy makes life impossible, it is important to invest in our girls’ education, so that they can lead independent and empowered lives.

Every girl deserves to be educated and this does not exclude Pakistani girls.

Diminish Child Labour/Early Marriage

#RaiseTheAge Movement Demands end to child marriages

Pakistan ranks third in the world when it comes to child labour. An estimated 12 million children under the age 16 serve as labour in Pakistan; 8 million of which are estimated to be girls. A study conducted in Bangladesh, involving 9,000 girls found that the rates of child marriage dropped to 31% when the girls received educational tutoring and classes in critical thinking.

Imagine if the same methods were applied in Pakistan, with a percentage of 21% of child marriage. The country’s child marriage/labour rates would drop if education was made mandatory. Girls would be able to spend their childhoods in front of books instead of slaving away, cleaning floors.

With at least 12 years of education, a girl will be gifted with enough knowledge to teach her children, pursue a career, and become a contributing member to the Pakistani community.

We are in need of more educated women in our educational, government and medical fields. Women make up a significant chunk of our population and should therefore be able to contribute in every walk of life.

Many prominent female figures such as Malala Yousafzai, Muniba Mazari and Fiza Farhan have originated from Pakistan. These women become icons of hope for our young girls, encouraging them to stand for their own rights and lives. Consider how many inspirational women Pakistan could produce if we made at least 12 years of education mandatory for our girls?

As Brigham Young once said: “When you educate a man, you educate a man. When you educate a woman, you educate an entire generation.”

  1. Incredible article, and too true. Access to education as a fundamental human right has to become the norm in every country in the world. That girls and young women are still restricted is completely unacceptable. Educating women has to become part of normal investment in community well-being. Awesome job on speaking to this important issue.

  2. Totally agree with the article. Girls need education and we need 2 help them recieve it! Well said!

  3. If you educate a man you educate an individual but if you educate a woman you educate a nation.
Girls education is more important than boys.
I think every Pakistani girl need at least 16 years of education.

  4. This! Important, beyond important, and urgent. This question of why girls education, for at least 12 years, is necessary is an unfortunate question because we’re in the 21st century and still stuck on such a simplistic and straightforward issue; but being an unfortunate question, it doesn’t mean it’s not to be addressed, or to be ignored. We have all the more reason to bring it up and rationalize it, and it’s consequences. I think Yusra has written a wonderful article that articulates, in tangible statistics and reasoning, the dire need for girls education at all levels and may I add that the perhaps the first step in moving forward in this direction would be to make education free and accessible to all.

  5. Apart from potentially allowing her to stand up on her two feet, education gives light to confidence and gives power to knowledge because she now knows that she has the ability to do just about anything. Yes education on it’s own is nothing at times, however basic education can open doors to a world that awaits them.

  6. Proud of you. I am surprised and extremely glad to know that somebody born and raised in Canada has identified problems of Pakistan so accurately. Education is a basic right for every human being and for the girls it is even more important. Neapoleon once said “Give me good mother’s and I will give you a good nation. It evidently not only let you understand the life better but also help you to raise the next generation.
