The Indian elections are underway and are scheduled to continue till mid-May 2019.

As India votes, global media has been using a microscopic lens to analyze all that went down in the country during the last five years since 2014 when Narendra Modi stepped in as India’s Prime Minister.

While an uncalled for rise in persecutions in Indian held Kashmir and escalation of hostilities with neighbours including Pakistan have been among the issues that have captured global debates, for an average Indian, the list of grievances is quite different.

Recent researches conducted both by the Indian government as well as national and international advocacy groups show that Narendra Modi failed India and its people in resolving long-standing issues of poverty, joblessness, safety and pollution. Some of these data sets reveal that India has in fact become worse-off in these departments under the Modi-led BJP government.

Highest Unemployment in 4 Decades

Despite assurances by Narendra Modi and BJP that India’s unemployment problem was under control, leaked government data revealed that in 2018 India experienced the highest unemployment rate in 45 years!

As per the leaked survey results, college graduates were increasingly being forced to take on menial jobs while daily wage labourers reported a marked reduction in their incomes.

Violence Against Women & Rape

India has often made headlines for heinous crimes against women.

According to government data released in 2016, about 100 women are raped in India every day.

While an anti-rape law was hastily passed in 2012 following the gang rape of a young girl in a bus in Dehli, there has not been a serious effort for its effective implementation.

Sky-rocketing Poverty

Narendra Modi had come into power riding high on promises of alleviating the fortunes of India’s most destitute. However, as joblessness figures reveal, not only has BJP failed to address the country’s poverty issue but in some ways, might even have added to it.

Millions continue to live under the poverty line without access to basic facilities such as clean drinking water and sanitation.

The phenomenon of farmer suicides also saw a resurgence during Modi years.

Unprecedented Pollution

One of the first campaigns that Narendra Modi undertook upon taking government was the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign.

Five years down it seems that the campaign was only successful in creating photo ops for PM Modi rather than actually resolving India’s pollution problem.

According to the most recent data released by GreenPeace, IQAir and AirVisual, 7 out of the 10 most polluted cities in the world are in India.

A Hit on India’s Secular Identity

While Indian constitution remains secular, many analysts, including Indians believe that the country’s secular values have taken a hard hit under Narendra Modi.

From mob violence led by Hindu extremists against religious minorities – most notably Muslims – and hate speech at an all time high, it is hard to deny that India’s secular image has been adversely affected under Narendra Modi.
