On Day 12,001– or what seems like it – of quarantine, I can say I officially now miss school. The prevalence of coronavirus has quite drastically turned each and everybody’s life around and social norms and institutions have fallen severely off-track.

I remember the first night when it was announced that all schools would be closed up until the 5th of April, I like many others was on the top the world and ready to celebrate. But now, after spending all these quarantine days with only socializing with my mother, I’m not so sure how to go about it.

This is what my quarantined life looks like!

No Studying!

Just two weeks without school, and I’ve already forgotten half my syllabus.  Apparently, most kids don’t study unless they’ve got the pressure of a teacher or the anxiety of exams hanging over their heads.

With so many board exams being cancelled or postponed, teens quite honestly don’t know how to proceed further. For all those O and A level students out there – I feel you! Cambridge International can’t seem to make up its mind about when exactly they should test us and it’s stirring up nothing but confusion.

Don’t even get me started on online classes in which the majority of the time is spent dealing with a technical difficulty (like fixing the sound or trying to fiure out exactly what the teacher is trying to display). A better option one finds is just to say, “Sorry Sir, I can’t attend, the Wifi isn’t working…”

Just recently, the education minister announced the closure of schools until the 31st of May and I don’t know whether to shout in excitement or in misery.

Sleep, Eat, Netflix, Repeat

You’re lying if you’re a teenager who says s/he hasn’t been spending at least 8 hours on the phone in a day. Let’s face it – this is the easiest and quickest form of entertainment we have available; binge-watching TV serials or scrolling mindlessly through Instagram.

At this point, even eating is a way to escape the boredom. Feeling bored? Let’s take a walk to the kitchen.

If you ask me, I’ve probably finished at least five different Netflix TV shows in this a short span of time.

I think I’ve probably lost all sense of date and time. Is it Monday or Thursday? Who knows and it doesn’t matter! – The monotony of everyday life doesn’t even let me distinguish one day from the next anymore.

Time to Get Productive?

Let’s admit – everything is at a standstill but it’s also an opportunity for members of the society to take a deep breath and stop to smell the flowers (literally, please don’t leave your house). I, for one, definitely needed a break from the constant vicious cycle of going to school and coming home to pour over my books, day after day. I’m not going to lie – these several days of lethargy and laziness felt great.

However, it’d be foolish to waste so much free time. Pick up a notepad, a novel, an instrument or even a new language. I think God has given all of us young minds ample time to relax and loosen up a bit.

On a serious note, all you (young) people should be staying inside and isolated! But don’t just drown in your thoughts. Make the most out of this free time!
