Currently, the media industry of Pakistan is going through a severe financial crisis which in turn has led to massive layoffs. Given this, major media houses are excessively indulging in exploitative practices in order to do minimize loss on their part. One such story emerged when Asad Shabbir, a former Daily Times employee, shared a thread on Twitter two days ago, calling out the Taseer brothers for not clearing his payment.

Asad Shabbir joined Daily Times on the 8th of June, 2018 as a Subeditor for their web-based platform. Normally, when one starts a new job, they are presented with a contract from that respective company. However, Daily Times delayed the protocol and asked Shabbir to sign a backdated contract a month after he had started working. During this while, whenever Shabbir inquired about the contract his request was not taken that seriously.

Upon receiving the contract, when Shabbir went through it, he found clause 4 of the contract very alarming. This clause required the employee to pay the ‘unserved salary’ if he or she resigns before the conclusion of the contract or in case of any non-compliance.

After several failed discussions over this clause with the Daily Times administration, Shabbir finally resigned from the organization which was quite contrary to Shahbaz’s account who claimed that the journalist was rather fired from the job.

Shabbir went on to share more such cases in his thread in order to highlight the gravity of the issue.

On tweeting this thread, Asad was blocked by Shahbaz Taseer for obvious reasons. However, the number of retweets of the thread is evident of the fact that people are finally speaking up against the exploitative behavior of the media houses.

Following the episode, it has become necessary for the Daily Times and other news channels to put their house in order if they want to redeem themselves. Otherwise, sooner or later, these organizations will have to face the music, be it in the form of loss of seasoned journalists or the defamation that comes with the heinous practice of not clearing dues.
