Despite experiencing one of the most pronounced political divides in decades, Pakistanis, last evening, unanimously expressed their grief upon hearing about the former First lady’s demise.
#KulsoomNawaz May she rest in peace. Moments like death, birth remind us of our shared humanity. May we never be so bitterly divided that we cannot share grief.

We are extremely saddened by the news of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s passing away. We have massive respect for her, who stood like a rock in the face of a dictator, when no one else around her did. May she rest in peace. #KalsoomNawaz

As soon as the news of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s demise became public, Pakistanis from all walks of life put aside their political affiliations to mourn the death of a woman who was considered a strong soldier of the democratic movement in Pakistan.
Condolences to the Sharif Family on the sad demise of #KulsoomNawaz. May God Bless her soul. We find it easy to malign and criticize Politicians. We should also have the grace of acknowledging their personal sacrifices and struggle regardless of whichever party they belong to.

I still remember meeting #kulsoomnawaz after Nawaz Sharif was jailed by @P_Musharraf Shebrecounted how difficult it was for a house wife to come out and lead a political struggle against dictatorship and revived @pmln_org #RIP

Begum Nawaz, who had been severely unwell for the last one year had not been spared by hate messages from political opponents while seeking treatment in England. Some had even gone as far as to label her illness as a political stunt.

For this reason, many individuals from what is considered Pakistan’s intelligentsia, put out angry tweets yesterday challenging those who had callously spread fake rumours about the former First Lady to explain their conspiracy theories in the wake of her death.
Rest in peace, Kulsoom Nawaz. I wonder what the usual idiots who were constantly calling her illness a ‘stunt’ going through.
Actually the zombies won’t be going through anything. They neither have the heart nor the brains to do that. Numb punks.— Nadeem Farooq Paracha (@NadeemfParacha) September 11, 2018
What would all those who campaigned that Kulsoom Nawaz’s ailment was fake will say now? Just witness tormentors trying to become sympathisers now that the woman has died as her daughter and husband deal with inordinate delays in bail pleas.

This is also the time for zealots to apologise who kept on calling #KalsoomNawaz ‘s illness as a ‘stunt’ or ‘drama’. Ditto for some mediapersons who peddled such theories& aired insensitive & sometimes vile remarks. Humanity & decency should never be forsaken in public discourse.

Throughout the last month after coming off ventilator, Kulsoom Nawaz kept asking daily about @MaryamNSharif & Nawaz Sharif and wanted to speak to them, wondered why Maryam wasn’t making video calls anymore. Her sons had no answer, made excuses #RIPBegumKulsoomNawaz

In another scenario images of her husband and daughter being released on parole might have irked many who opposed their politics.
However, in the wee hours of the night between 11th and 12th September, when Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz stepped out of Adiala Jail to join their mother’s funeral, many shared those pictures on social media with messages of love and prayers.
