A Recap…

In April 2018, Meesha Shafi shared her #MeToo story on Twitter, alleging that Ali Zafar sexually harassed the female singer on more than one occasion.

Following this, a number of other women also came out with their unfortunate incidents, accusing Ali Zafar of sexual misconduct.

Ali Zafar categorically denied the allegations and later that month, filed a defamation case against Shafi.

The case was taken to Lahore district court and then Lahore High Court where Shafi’s case and later, even her appeal was dismissed and her plea to cross-examine Ali Zafar’s witnesses was rejected. During this while (i.e. last month), the LSA controversy also emerged as some of the nominees withdrew their names from the award show because of the nomination of an alleged harasser – Ali Zafar. The outrage later led to several dramatic media appearances by Zafar and only a single interview by Shafi where her poise was worth noticing.

The Latest Twist…

On the account of not allowing joint cross-examination of Zafar’s witnesses, Shafi moved her case to Supreme Court.

Four days ago, a two-member bench of SC finally granted Meesha the permission to record the joint statement and joint cross-examination in separate hearings.

The development came following constant reluctance posed by Zafar’s lawyer to conduct joint cross examinations; that too in separate hearings. However, the move was shot down by Justice Qazi Faez Isa when he stated that the court is authorized to conduct both the sessions separately.

SC also ordered a quick wrapping of Meesha Shafi court case trial in a three months time as decided by the LHC on April, 9th.

Shafi’s lawyer is now preparing for the joint cross-examination session of Zafar’s witnesses.
