Coronavirus Testing: This Is Where Pakistan Stands

The only “cure” or prevention known so far for the deadly coronavirus is massive testing and consequent quarantining. While several countries are conducting thousands of tests per day, Pakistan is still struggling to get its hands on enough kits to roll-out the exercise on a mass scale.

These are the steps taken so far in Pakistan for coronavirus testing!

1. According to Gulf News, Pakistan’s testing capacity has enhanced from the initial 30,000 to 280,000. This is likely to further enhance to 900,000 by mid April.

2. As per reports, Punjab has announced to increase its coronavirus testing capacity to 2,500 tests per day.

3. NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Muhammad Afzal told the PM that coronavirus testing laboratories nationwide have been increased from 14 to 20.

4. First drive-through coronavirus testing facility has been established by the Sindh government in Karachi. It will enable suspected coronavirus patients to get themselves tested without having to wait in long hospital queues.

5. According to the travel advisory issued by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Tuesday, passengers will have to go through a screening and health examination process at the airport.

6. NUST has developed cheap testing kits for coronavirus. Associate Professor Dr Aneela Javed said that their availability “depends on the company’s capacity which will introduce the product in the market.”
