Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan introduced some major changes in the federal cabinet yesterday. Hence, here is a look at who is in and who is out following the development.

The Biggest Surprise Of Them All

Asad Umar’s resignation has got to be the biggest surprise for everyone concerned as he simply refused to take over the ministry for energy and instead chose to step down from his position and leave the cabinet altogether. He eventually, took to twitter to announce his decision.

As part of a cabinet reshuffle PM desired that I take the energy minister portfolio instead of finance. However, I have obtained his consent to not take any cabinet position. I strongly believe @ImranKhanPTI is the best hope for Pakistan and inshallah will make a naya pakistan

Former finance minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh has been named as the adviser on finance however, with the post gone vacant, media reports suggest that Omer Ayub and Ishart Hussain have emerged as strong candidates for the position and the name of one of the two is likely to be announced in due course.

Those Who Were Axed

Apparently, Amir Mehmood Kayani has had to pay heavy after failing to manage the drug price crisis as he has been removed from the portfolio of health minister as well as the federal cabinet.

Similarly, Ali Amin Gandapur too finds himself axed as he is now, no longer the minister for Kashmir affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan after he had visibly failed to project the Kashmir issue particularly, following the incident of Pulawama.

Those Who Were Reshuffled

Fawad Chaudhry is no longer the Minster for Information and broadcast and has been instead given the Ministry for Science and Technology.

Firdous Ashiq Awan takes over as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Division. However, there is every possibility of a new information minister’s appointment in the days to become. Fawad Chaudhry’s differences with Naeem-ul-Haq over the appointment of senior officials at PTV is as one of the possible reasons behind the decision.

Also, the petroleum ministry has been taken away from Ghulam Sarwar Khan and he will now be the new federal minister for aviation. 

Shehryar Afridi who was Minister of state for interior has now been handed over the portfolio of the Minister for States and Frontier Regions.

Who Makes A Comeback?

Azam Swati who had resigned last year after accusations of using his influence to order transfer of a senior government official makes a comeback in the federal cabinet where he has been appointed as the federal minister for parliamentary affairs.

PTI Announces An Interior Minister For The First Time

Prime Minister Imran Khan has let go of the additional charge of the interior ministry which will now be run by Brig ® Ijaz Ahmed Shah who had been announced the federal minister for parliamentary affairs only during the last month.
