Pakistan’s poor performance in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy has put immense pressure on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to make changes in the dugout to halt the decline. Media reports suggest that, sensing the inevitable, senior players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah are likely to skip the tour to avoid the risk of being dropped.

For Babar Azam, it is now evident that he needs a break from international cricket to address his shortcomings and return as a stronger player. As for the pacers, taking a break also seems logical, given New Zealand’s generally small grounds, where they are likely to concede heavily once again. However, the break will only be beneficial if these senior players refrain from participating in league cricket and instead work on their weaknesses under the supervision of an experienced coach. This approach would put them in a better position to stage a strong comeback.
Given the circumstances, the tour presents a valuable opportunity for young cricketers to secure their place in the team and strengthen the bench depth.
