European countries are known for being among the most progressive nations in the world. However, the European Parliament was in for a shock earlier this month when a Polish lawmaker passed sexist remarks on the floor of the House.

Janusz Korwin-Mikke, the Polish lawmaker in question in his now infamous remarks said, “Women must earn less than men because they are weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent.”

Needless to say, his comments immediately attracted a strong reaction from all quarters, forcing the President of the European Parliament to open an investigation against Korwin-Mikke. Following the investigation, the Polish politician stands the risk of sanctions, a fine or a temporary suspension.

This is not the first time that Janusz Korwin-Mikke has attracted attention for the wrong reasons. In the past he has pulled a number of stunts (including doing a Nazi salute in the European Parliament in 2015) that have often shamed his country and forced his government to apologize.

Korwin-Mikke’s outrageous comments and his constant attention seeking behavior makes sense in the light of his party’s failing political fortunes. In 2015 during parliamentary elections in Poland, his party, won under 5% of the vote thereby failing to win any seats.

Given this political track record, his behavior seems like a cry to remain relevant and in the news – even if its for all the wrong reasons!
