We hear many stories on daily basis where doctor negligence in Pakistan results in harm to the patient; sometimes leading to consequences as serious as death or disability.

Only this month, we heard about the heart-breaking news of an eight-year-old boy who died in Lahore after the doctor allegedly administered wrong injection.

Medical Malpractice

In simple terms, medical malpractice is when a hospital or doctor through a negligent act cause injury to a patient. Medical malpractice can cost a doctor his/her medical license if charges are proven.

Another Case of Doctor Negligence in Islamabad

On 21th August, Mohammad Shair Zaman, a senior citizen went to “Saleem Medical Clinic” with his son, Muhammad Tanvir.

According to Muhammad Tavir, his father, Mohammad Zaman was suffering from a stomach ache when he was brought to a medical facility near Zia Masjid Islamabad for treatment.

Doctor Salim of the clinic administered an injection to relieve the pain. Sher Zaman’s pain eased and they went home.

A heavy price for doctor negligence in Islamabad

The next day, Zaman’s arm where the injection was administered started to turn black. Soon, the skin of the arm started to peel off.

The doctor had allegedly given the wrong injection.

A blogger, Sidra Aslam met Mohammad Tanvir and his father who wanted to sue the doctor and wanted justice.

The family went back to the medical facility to ask the doctor the name of that injection. When they reached, they saw another patient having a similar argument with Doctor Salim and so he did not pay attention to Sher Zaman’s concerns.

Then, Mohammad Tanvir took his father to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). There, the doctors told them that the arm had to be removed because otherwise the poison from the injection would spread to the whole body.

Tanivr wrote an appeal to Prime Minister Imran Khan to take action Doctor Salim and to ascertain if he is a certified medical practitioner.

So far no action has been taken.
